Pollen – Biology in less than a nutshell

Prof.Dr. Gerhard Obermeyer
Molecular Plant Biophysics and Biochemistry, University of Salzburg, Austria

The germination and following tube growth of pollen grains serve as an ideal model system to study cellular polarity. During the life cycle of a pollen grain almost all cellular processes observed in whole plants are combined to a fine-regulated network that generates a pollen tube growing towards the egg cell where it finally releases the sperm cells during fertilization. Basic research on the understanding of pollen tube growth also contributes to applied research including food production or allergenic diseases. In the presentation, a general introduction on pollen polarity and cellular processes involved is given with a focus on the specific role of ion transporters, membrane proteins or trafficking and water transport. Recent results on the pollen (organelle) proteome and osmoregulation during pollen tube growth are presented.
