Cell edges – from patterning to growth control

How do multicellular organisms shape their organs? The underlying process of morphogenesis is inherently complex, and involves multiple scales in time and space as well as different types of information – genetic, biochemical, mechanical, and geometric. We have recently shown that the edges of polyhedral plant cells are essential domains for growth control, with a unique biochemical and mechanical identity. I will present our latest hypotheses regarding the mechanisms that establish cell edge polarity, how this polarity is used to control 3D growth, and why such mechanisms have evolved in the context of 3D organogenesis.
