The distribution and composition of biomass on Earth

How should we study life at the planetary scale? I argue for an integrative Earth systems biology that links organisms and their (local) environments to (global) biogeochemical cycles, e.g. carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus. I will attempt to advocate for this approach by discussing recent efforts to quantify physiological adaptation in plant roots; to measure the distribution of all biomass on Earth; and to assemble a catalog of the elemental composition(s) of all life.
