From hormone to tissue: organization of root vascular pattern
Centre for Plant Integrative Biology, University of Nottingham
As multicellular organisms grow positional information is continually needed to regulate the pattern in which cells are arranged. We use the radial pattern of the Arabidopsis root as system for understanding tissue patterning. Most cell types in the root are organized in a radially symmetric pattern. However, a symmetry-breaking event generates bisymmetric auxin and cytokinin signalling domains within the vascular tissues. These specific domains of hormone response pattern the vascular tissue, as cells with high auxin response go on to differentiate as xylem, whilst cells with high cytokinin response take on procambial and phloem cell fate. We are combining experimental approaches with mathematical modelling to understand the molecular basis controlling these patterns of hormone response in the root.
