Messages from the undergound: strigolactones as hormones and symbiotic signals

Strigolactones form a novel class of phytohormones involved in many aspects of plant development. They are also released into the rhizosphere, where they stimulate symbiotic fungi and parasitic plants. Strigolactones thus belong to the growing list of compounds acting both as internal regulators and as interkingdom signals. Our main interest is in Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, which develop root endosymbioses with most plants. More specifically, we study the signalling events that take place during the early stages of the symbiosis. I will explain how this work led us to discover the hormonal function of strigolactones, and will give a few examples to illustrate recent discoveries on strigolactone action in both symbiotic and hormonal contexts.
