Regulation of root hydraulic properties by arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis

Ricardo Aroca
Estación Experimental del Zaidín (CSIC) Granada, Spain

Plants in nature stablish a symbiosis with several soil microorganisms, among those, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are the most spread. By this symbiosis the plants get nutrients and water not accessible to their roots, and the fungi get carbon compounds and a niche to complete their life cycle. There were some evidences supporting the idea that AM mycelia could transport water directly to plant roots. Our group was pioneer in studying how AM symbiosis regulated plant aquaporins, and also how fungal aquaporins were regulated by the symbiosis. It was found that AM symbiosis favored water flowing by the apoplastic path inside roots. Most recently, we focused on how different plant hormones modify the effects of AM symbiosis in root hydraulic properties, especially methyl jasmonate and auxins. At the end of the talk it will presented briefly how rhizobium-leguminoseae symbiosis also modified root hydraulic properties.
