Gibberellin regulation of plant growth

Patrick Achard
Institut de Biologie Moléculaire des Plantes, Strasbourg

Regulation of plant growth, one of the most important agronomic traits, has been the focus of intensive research during the green revolution for improving crop performance. Stem elongation takes place as a result of repeated cell divisions and subsequent elongation of cells produced by apical meristems. The phytohormones gibberellins (GAs) have long been known to control plant height by stimulating the degradation of nuclear growth-repressing DELLA proteins (DELLAs), however the mechanism that brings about GA-responsive growth is still slowly emerging. The talk will cover our recent work on the molecular mechanisms by which GAs promote growth over long distances.
