Epigenetic control of genome stability
University of Geneva, Switzerland
Epigenetic regulation of transcription involves changes in patterns of DNA and histones modifications and divides chromatin to the transcriptionally silent heterochromatin and active euchromatin. Silent heterochromatin encompasses a plethora of transposable elements and their transcriptional silencing has been considered as a defence mechanism preventing their movement. I will discuss these aspects of heterochromatin dynamics and molecular mechanisms involved in silencing maintenance. I will also consider epigenetic regulation occurring in heterochromatin not only as a driving force of genome defence but also as a force of genome evolution.
