Characterization of atypical MAP Kinase modules involved in the delayed signaling of environment

MAPK modules are constituted of 3 kinases (MAP3K/MAP2K/MAPK) activating each other by phosphorylation. They are thought to define rapid signaling cascades activated by a large number of environmental stresses. This assumption is driven by the intensive characterization of few iconic MAPKs -MPK3, MPK4 and MPK6- and their related modules. In 2014, we reported the identification of a new MAPK module activated by ABA in the context of drought signaling. It is composed of the two MAP3Ks MAP3K17/18, the atypical MAP2K MKK3 and the MAPKs MPK1/2/7/14. Surprising, the ABA activation of this module occurs in few hours and we showed that the limiting step is the ABA-dependent transcriptional production of MAP3K17/18. In September, I will present recent data suggesting that MKK3 module is activated by other signals and that the MAP3K transcriptional regulation seems to be a conserved activation mechanism. We notably characterized the module in the context of wound/insect and nitrate signaling. The fact that these kinases are found in many plantae genomes suggests they play important roles. Nevertheless, the cellular processes that they modulate remain unidentified. All suggestions are welcome!
