Shining a light on phosphate: a caged-compound strategy for the controlled release of phosphate in living cells

Hélène Javot
Laboratoire de Biologie du Développement des Plantes-Saint-Paul-lez-Durance

The light-induced release of a biomolecule from a caged precursor is a powerful tool for generating a concentration jump of a specific element in a time- and space-controlled manner. Caged compounds are used in cellular biology, electrophysiological and neurobiological studies, in particular to describe signal transduction pathways. New caged molecules were generated, thanks to a collaboration between our laboratory (LBDP, CEA Cadarache) and the team of A. Specht (Faculté de Pharmacie, Illkirch). These molecules permit the controlled release of phosphate in response to illumination. The properties of these « caged phosphates » will be described. Future efforts are focused on the in vivo application of these new compounds.
