The role of plant ABCG-type ABC transporters in phytohormone transport

Pr Enrico Martinoia
Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, University of Zurich, Suisse

Plant hormones (phytohormones) orchestrate plant growth and development in response to endogenous cues and environmental changes. Several classes of transporters such as PINs, AUX/LAXs, PUPs, NRTs and MATEs have been shown to be implicated in hormone transport. In addition it has been shown that ABC transporters act as transporters for a large number of plant hormones. While several ABCB-type transporters have been shown to be involved in auxin transport, ABCG-type transporters have been demonstrated to transport several terpenoid derived phytohormones, such as abscisic acid, cytokinins and strigolactones. In the first part of my talk I will summarize our work on abscisic acid and cytokinin transport and show the impact the transporters have in drought stress, seed germination and shoot development. In the second part I will focus on the Petunia strigolcatone transporter PaPDR1. I will show the impact this transporter has for mycorrhization and shoot branching and how these different aspects can be mediated by the same transporter. Furthermore I will discuss the effect of overexpressing this transporter on plant nutrition and show that strigolactones have a great impact on the formation/maintenance of hypodermal passage cells, the entry points of mycorrhozal fungi.
