Role of two-components systems on stomatal aperture control in Arabidopsis thaliana: study of cytokinin signalling in guard cells

Stomata are small pores allowing gas exchange and water loss in plants. They are found on the underside part of the leaves. Facing to changing environmental conditions, plants are able to modulate their water loss by adjusting their number of stomata and by controlling their aperture. We now have a good knowledge of the signals able to control stomatal aperture. However, how these signals are integrated in the cell to induce a unique response is still poorly understood. Effect of cytokinins (phytohormones) on stomatal aperture is not straightforward and appears to be dependant of other stimuli. Cytokinin signalling characterization allows a better understanding of how cytokinin signal interacts with other stimuli and provides new insights to investigate signals integration in plants. Calcium plays a crucial role in guard cell signalling and, at a greater extent, in signal transduction in the living world. Our recent work aiming to identify the major steps of Ca2+ signalling evolution in Eukaryotes will be briefly presented.
