The genetic architecture of natural ionomic variation in Arabidopsis thaliana

David E. Salt
University of Aberdeen, UK

Genome-wide association (GWA) mapping using 349 wild-collected Arabidopsis thaliana accessions genotyped at 250k biallelic SNPs is starting to reveal the genetic architecture and molecular mechanisms underlying natural variation in the capacity of A. thaliana to accumulate mineral nutrients and trace elements (aka ionome). Furthermore, ecological studies on standing populations of A. thaliana in Catalonia, Spain coupled with common garden experiments in the field in the same region are now starting to reveal the existence of locally adapted populations of A. thaliana and a potential role for the ionomic variation identified by GWA mapping.
