Towards an integrative model of the mechanisms controlling the morphogenesis in brown algae: case of the filamentous brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus

Bénédicte Charrier
Station Biologique Roscoff

Ectocarpus siliculosus early body is a string of elongated to round shaped cells precisely ordered. It belongs to the Heterokonta phylum, which diverged from the Archaeplastida (comprising land plants) and the Opisthokonta (metazoans and fungi) more than 1.6 billion years ago before multicellularity evolved in the tree lineages. Marine environment exposes Ectocarpus to important salt variations (~300 to 2000 mOsm), and strong mechanical forces (currents, waves). The major differences in environments and forms, and the long phylogenetic distance between brown algae and the other groups of multicellular organisms question the conservation of known morphogenetic factors and the evolution of original mechanisms in Ectocarpus lineage. To answer those questions, we currently combine multidisciplinary approaches: measurements of cell wall stiffness (by atomic force microscopy) and intracellular forces, in addition to single-cell transcriptomic data generated along the algal filament. Further integration of these data by computer modelling will contribute to propose a model accounting for Ectocarpus early morphogenesis.
