 Guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp)- a highly conserved regulator of chloroplast function during growth and stress acclimation

The chloroplast is the powerhouse of the plant cell that is essential for driving growth and development. However, chloroplasts are resource-intensive and will cause photooxidative damage if their activity is not matched to the needs of the cell.  This is especially important under stressful conditions when growth and chloroplast activity must be repressed together. The mechanisms underlying the matching of chloroplast activity to growth are not fully understood. Studies from our group and others suggest that the guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp) signalling pathway may play a major role in regulating chloroplast activity (Field 2018). Here, I will present our recent work showing how ppGpp signalling plays a highly conserved role in regulating photosynthesis and nutrient remobilisation in plants and algae. I will then go on to  discuss how ppGpp signalling may be involved in acclimation to specific environmental stresses.
