Previously, only four species were known worldwide, all from the Holarctic region. A survey of phoretic mites associated with beetles inhabiting bracket fungi revealed a diverse and previously undocumented fauna from the Oriental, Australian, and Holarctic regions and single species from the Neotropical and Afrotropical regions. Here, we establish Boletoglyphini trib. nov. and provide a taxonomic revision of the tribe. We describe three new genera, Alegoriopus gen. nov. (A. demodocus sp. nov.), Bolitoxenopus gen. nov. (B. polyphemus sp. nov.), and Sphaerotheriopus gen. nov. (S. odysseus sp. nov.), eight new species in Boletoglyphus (B. anticleia sp. nov., B. athena sp. nov., B. circe sp. nov., B. calypso sp. nov., B. penelope sp. nov., B. helena, sp. nov. B. nausicaa sp. nov., B. eurycleia sp. nov.) and four new species in Capillaroglyphus (C. eurymachus sp. nov., C. eumaeus sp. nov., C. telemachus sp. nov., C. hermes sp. nov.). Previously known species are redescribed, and an identification key to all known species of Boletoglyphini is provided. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred from 86 morphological characters of phoretic deutonymphs scored for 19 ingroup taxa and four outgroup genera. Parsimony analysis supported the monophyly of Boletoglyphini and recovered the relationships Sphaerotheriopus, Alegoriopus, (Bolitoxenopus, (Boletoglyphus, Capillaroglyphus)). Most members of the tribe are associated with polypore fungi and disperse on beetles inhabiting the same sporocarps, primarily members of Bolitophagini (Tenebrionidae). However, early-diverging lineages (Sphaerotheriopus, Alegoriopus) are associated with other hosts, suggesting that association with polypore fungi evolved within Boletoglyphini after their origin. The known distribution of Boletoglyphini is expanded from the Holarctic region to Southeast Asia, Australia, Africa and Central and South America, revealing a substantially greater diversity and broader geographic range than previously recognized.
