Currently, this complex includes 12 species, including Hygrobates lusitanicus sp. nov., which is described herein from Portugal using an integrative taxonomic approach. To facilitate future identification and research, we provide an overview of the 12 species within the complex based on 787 BOLD records, a large portion of which are publicly accessible. Furthermore, our study provides the first record of Hygrobates persicus Pešić & Asadi, 2017 for Cyprus. We discuss the biogeographic implications of this finding, specifically regarding the timing of island colonization and the evolutionary history of the complex in the Mediterranean. ER -
