L. Koch) (Acarina, Prostigmata). - The Spermatophore and the Functional Morphology of the Male Reproductive Organs of Sphaerolophiis ncardinalis (C. L. KoCH) (Acarina, Prostigmata). The study is concerned with both the morphology of the spermatophore and the functional morphology of the male reproductive organs of Sphaerolophus cardinalis. The systematic position of the species is discussed. Sphaerolophus produces stalked spermatophores. The stalk is formed between the eugenital lips, whereas the sperm drop is formed in the central part of the ejaculatory duct and is covered there by a thick layer of a secretion produced by the glandular part of the testis. The secretion is homologous to the secretion type III, which forms in A brolophits species a membranous crown topping the spermatophore (WITTE, 1975). Sperm drop and stalk are glued together apparently by a secretion from a pair of glands entering into the ejaculatory duct. The systematic position of Sphaerolophus next to A brolophits within one subfamily (Callidosomatinae) is not justified. ER -
