Abstract

The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the market structure and utilization trends of biological control agents (BCAs) in Japan. In light of the MIDORI Strategy for Sustainable Food Systems, which aims to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, this research clarifies the current standing and role of BCAs— with a specific focus on predatory mites—within the Japanese agricultural landscape using both quantitative and qualitative data. We extracted and analyzed sales statistics and registration data for BCAs in Japan from 1995 to 2023. Our analysis reveals a rapid increase in demand for agents centered on predatory mites, with a significant rise in adoption rates within greenhouse horticulture (e.g., strawberries, eggplants). In particular, sales values have surged for Phytoseiulus persimilis and Neoseiulus californicus as key solutions for spider mite control, alongside Amblyseius swirskii for managing thrips and whiteflies. Although still in the early stages, the Japanese market is showing signs of moving beyond the mere substitution of chemical pesticides, beginning to shift towards embedding these agents into the entire cultivation system. The introduction of phytoseiid BCAs has significantly contributed to the reduction of chemical pesticide use in Japanese horticulture, and they are expected to play an even more vital role in its sustainable future. To sustain these activities, we recommend to the government that the registration of biological control agents (BCAs) be further simplified than it is now Acknowledgements: This work was partly supported by Cabinet Office, Government of Japan, Moonshot Research and Development Program for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (funding agency: Bio-oriented Technology Research Advancement Institution) JPJ009237.
