Allochaetophoridae Linotetranidae Tenuipalpidae Tetranychidae Tuckerellidae checklist

Abstract

This catalog lists 198 species within 39 genera and five families. It provides a comprehensive list of recorded species, along with details on their original descriptions, host plants, and collection sites. Updates on host plant classification and details of species preserved in the collection of the Acarology Laboratory, Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, Kerman, Iran are also provided. The distribution of these five families reflects the scope of mite research across various provinces. Furthermore, a diagram illustrates the number of described species and related publications from Iran.

Introduction

The superfamily Tetranychoidea comprises several thousand phytophagous species, many of which are of significant economic importance. This superfamily includes five families: Allochaetophoridae, Linotetranidae, Tenuipalpidae, Tetranychidae, and Tuckerellidae (Meyer and Ueckermann, 1997).

Previously, 139 species belonging to 34 genera and four families of Tetranychoidea were recorded from Iran (Beyzavi et al. 2013). In this catalog 198 species belonging to 39 genera and five families are recorded. The total number of species of Tetranychoid mites recorded from Iran up to date is two species in one genus of the family Allochaetophoridae; six species in one genus of Linotetranidae; 86 species in 14 genera of Tenuipalpidae; 100 species in 22 genera of Tetranychidae and four species in one genus of Tuckerellidae.

Up to now, 71 new species (two Allochaetophoridae, four Linotetranidae, 44 Tenuipalpidae, 20 Tetranychidae and one Tuckerellidae) of Tetranychoidea were recorded from Iran.

The distribution of these five families reflects the extent of mite research conducted across different provinces of Iran. Kerman is the only province where all five families have been recorded. In contrast, no families have been reported from Yazd and Qazvin Provinces. In Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad and Semnan only have been recorded Tetranychidae, while in Qom has only been found Tenuipalpidae. The Linotetranidae family has been reported exclusively from Kerman, Hamedan, Gilan, and East Azerbaijan Provinces. Tuckerellidae has been recorded in Kerman, Mazandaran and Gilan Provinces, whereas the family Allotetranychidae is limited to Kerman and West Azerbaijan Provinces. In some provinces, one to three species from a single family have been identified (Figure 1). The family name of each host plants are provided, and the first mention of each host includes a citation of the author, based on the most current classification available on the World Flora Online (WFO) website. Because original sources sometimes only mention common names, valid scientific names for the genera are provided, along with a comprehensive list of all host plants in Supplementary Table 1.

Material and methods

This catalog presents a complete and up-to-date account of all known Tetranychoidea species reported from Iran. It is a continuation and complement to the work of Beyzavi et al. 2013, expanding on their foundation to provide a clearer and more comprehensive picture of the group's diversity in the country. All species recorded up to the time of writing are included, based on both recent publications and original data collected and verified by the author since 2013. In total, 276 scientific references were reviewed to confirm species identities, distributions, and current taxonomic placement. Each source was carefully examined to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information presented. All plant species — whether reported from Iran or cited as host plants in the original descriptions — were carefully reviewed and taxonomically verified using the WFO database, as shown in Supplementary Table 1. In cases where taxonomic revisions have transferred species to different genera, the updated names are provided. To avoid confusion, the host plant names from the original descriptions are also included in parentheses, preceded by ''Syn.''

Format used in catalog

The following format is used to present information on each taxon reported in this work:

Genus

• Catalog number, valid name, author and date of the corresponding original description.

• Type-species

• Number of species under each genus reported in this catalog.

Species

• Catalog number, valid name of species, author, date and page: type locality and host references to species redescription(s).

• Nomenclatural information: (e.g., valid species names, synonymy, and other combinations) is provided only for some species, based on the compiled literature, and does not represent a comprehensive synonymic list.

• Redescription(s) from Iran: author, date and page, report(s) of Iran: references of publications providing information on the morphology of the species.

• Iranian record(s): contains other(s) type locality and host references to species except original description and redescription(s) from Iran.

• Other informations: including other information collected from abstracts and congresses papers and Beyzavi et al. 2013.

• Type depository: the institution where holotype is deposited and collection number (if available).

• Note: changes in plant classification; existing species in the SBUK collection (other than the original description and typed specimens).

Remarks

From 2013 to 2024, several species described in the literature have been synonymized, as detailed below.

Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval, 1867) was synonymized with T. urticae Koch (1836) by Auger et al. 2013.

Phytoptipalpus kurdistaniensis Khanjani, Khanjani & Seeman, 2012d was synonymized with P. rosae (Mitrofanov & Strunkova, 1978) by Khanjani et al. (2013).

Tenuipalpus zahirii Khanjani & Seeman, 2013c was transferred to the genus Colopalpus by Castro et al. 2015.

Aegyptobia daneshvari Parsi & Khosrowshahi, 1990 was synonymized with Phytoptipalpus salicicola (Al-Gboory, 1987) by Khanjani et al. 2012d.

Aegyptobia ueckermanni Khosrowshahi & Arbabi, 1997 was synonymized with Aegyptobia tragardhi Sayed, 1950 by Khanjani et al. 2012d.

A. meyerae Khosrowshahi & Arbabi, 1997, which had been revised to A. kharazii by Mesa and Moraes in Mesa et al. 2009 was synonymized with A. beglarovi Livshits & Mitrofanov, 1967 by Khanjani et al. 2012d.

Tetranychus iraniensis (Mahdavi & Ueckermann, 2013b) was transferred to the genus Augeriflechtmannia by Mahdavi et al. 2021a.

Bastani Rad et al. (2024) reported the genus Hystrichonychus McGregor, 1950 from Sirjan (Pariz), Kerman Province on Nepeta ciliaris Benth. (Lamiaceae). Majidi and Akrami (2012) reported the genus Schizonobiella Beer & Lang, 1957 from the leaves of date palms in Fars Province. Additionally, two unidentified species of Bryobiella Tuttle & Baker, 1968 and Pseudobryobia McGregor, 1950 were reported by Khanjani and Kamali (1998) from pagoda trees, alfalfa fields, fruit trees, and range plants. Furthermore, an unidentified species of Neotetranychus Trägårdh was reported from Iran by Sepasgozarian (1971), The first report of tuckerellid mites is that of Kamali (1989) by mentioning Tuckerella sp. near. knorri Baker & Tuttle, 1975 from cypress trees in Khuzestan Beyzavi et al. (2013).

By offering an updated perspective on their diversity and distribution, this catalog enhances our understanding of these mites' ecological roles and supports better pest management and environmental monitoring in Iran.
