Obituary

The end of 2023 brought a great loss and a lot of sadness among researchers in the field of acarology and zoology, with the passing away of Dr. Neculai Alexandru Vasiliu, one of the pioneers in the study of mites, especially Oribatida, in Romania. He had a long and fruitful career in this field, with achievements that made him known in the country and abroad.

N. A. Vasiliu was born on November 25, 1935 in Iaşi. He spent his childhood years in Ştefăneşti, Botoşani county, a village on the banks of the Prut river with a varied and particularly beautiful landscape, and he was fascinated by living beings, by nature, even from this young age. He attended primary school in his home village, and the secondary and high school in Iaşi. Regarding the university, his first option was to study forestry, but he was not accepted in those days (the first years of the communist regime in Romania), because his parents were landowners. Therefore, he attended the Biology - Geography Faculty of ''Al. I. Cuza'' University in Iaşi and graduated in 1960. After graduation, as was required at that time, he worked as a teacher (1960-1962), then as a biologist at the Antibiotics Factory in Iaşi (1962-1964).

Then he successfully applied for a position in the Institute of General and Applied Biology in Iaşi (later Institute of Biological Research) and at the beginning of 1965 joined the Ecology and Fauna team established by Professor Zicman Feider. Therefore, this was the beginning of his activity as a researcher in the field of acarology, under the guidance of Professor Z. Feider. In the first years he worked with his teacher on Labidostomatidae (Trombidiformes), with notable results, as shown in the List of publications.

A few years later, he started studying oribatids, together with his new colleague Magda Călugăr, under the supervision of Professor Feider. In these years, under the coordination of the Romanian Academy, they conducted studies on the oribatid fauna in some regions of Romania, e. g. Iron Gates area, before it was flooded for the construction of the reservoir and the hydropower plant. In the same period, he started the doctoral internship, which he completed in 1976, when he gained the PhD degree with the thesis ''Contributions to the knowledge of oribatid mites (Acari) from the Moldova river basin'', supervised by Professor Feider.

In 1970 he made a study and documentation visit to Hungary, to the Institute of Zoology, the Institute of Parasitology and the National Museum of Natural History in Budapest. Also, in 1975, he went on another study visit to Warsaw, at the Institute of Ecology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Following these visits, new ideas emerged regarding the organization of the research work on edaphic mesofauna and the entire terrestrial ecology department. Practically, in those years, together with his colleagues Drs. Magda Călugăr, Marina Huţu (who studied Uropodina mites) and Felicia Bulimar (specialist in Collembola) made the transition from the qualitative study of soil fauna to the ecological, quantitative one, correlated with other factors or parameters within the ecosystem.

A period of intense and fruitful activity followed, with numerous and varied research projects, correlated with the priorities of that time. Together with his colleagues, he carried out ecological investigations in various types of ecosystems, both natural and anthropogenic or affected by industrial pollution. In parallel, he deepened the knowledge of the oribatid fauna and described many new species. During this period, he actively collaborated with other research teams from Romania, which brought emulation in his activity and remarkable results. The long collaboration with the Institute de Speleology ''Émile Racovitza'' from Bucharest is notable, resulting in a series of articles on the oribatid fauna of Cuba and Israel, including the description of many new species (see the List of publications).

Dr. N. A. Vasiliu was interested in attracting young researchers to take over and carry on his work. He was a mentor to a number of young researchers, whom he inspired, guided and supported in their professional development and generously shared his knowledge and experience.

Dr. Vasiliu was a passionate scientist who, although he retired in 1998, continued his work until 2018, during which time he published 19 articles. In these years, he focused especially on oribatid mites of the Oppiidae family. He was interested in all new publications related to this group and meticulously made notes on them. Lately, he was working on an improved classification system for these oribatid mites, a project that he did not manage to complete.

Beyond his research work, Dr. Vasiliu had a true profile of naturalist, with remarkable geographical, geological, plant and animal knowledge, which he developed over the years in numerous expeditions throughout the country. Also, from his youth he was passionate about hunting and fishing, the latter remaining a hobby for his whole life. He had amazing knowledge and observations about the ecology, biology and ethology of many fish species, unfortunately not published.

He was an optimistic person, with positive thinking, ready to offer help, a suitable advice, or to encourage younger colleagues. I am one of those young people once, who continued the research activity in the field of acarology, and I wrote this paper with all my gratitude and as a final tribute to Dr. Vasiliu.
