Abstract

/The Two Spotted Spider Mite, Tetranychus urticae is a notorious pest of many crops in different cropping systems. This mite is effectively controlled by some phytoseiid mites, with Phytoseiulus persimilis being the most voracious and fast reproducing, suitable for curative treatments. We compared preventive and curative treatments of N. californicus in commercial greenhouses, and achived a high level of control using the preventive approach. By adjusting the augmentation timing, dosage, supplemental diet and mechanical application methods, we have established protocols that are now implemented on the commercial level at various crops. The preventive approach proved satisfactory not just for protected crops, but also for open fields and apple orchards in which we compared preventive releases of N. californicus with an untreated control and found that preventive releases prevented outbreakes of mites of the genus Tetranychus.. Further studies assessed the ability to monitor the predatory mites in these systems. These were done in controlled conditions in deliberately infested cages, in which we compared the predators dynamics with and without spider mites infestations, and also the effect of alternative food. This trial demonstrated that a very low presence of the predator could still be useful for suppressing pest populations. Such levels are hard to monitor in the field, and require adjustments of the monitoring methods, and the interpretation of monitoring data. The consistency of the positive outcomes using the preventive approach, including reduction of the need for corrective interventions has made it a primary tool for controlling the Two Spotted Spider Mite in the Israeli market.
