Abstract
The dispersion pattern of the red vegetable mite, Tetranychus neocaledonicus Andre on brinjal plants was found to be contagious. Mites were restricted to the lower surface of the leaf only. There was no significant difference in the population of mite at the basal, middle and distal portions of the same Jeaf. Six sample sizes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, viz and 8 square centimeters were compared for their precision and efficiency and it was found that 1 cm2 (1 x 1 cm) sample size was the most efficient in this regard. Comparison of population from the three portions of the plant canopy (basal, middle and upper) indicated no significant difference. Fifty three leaves per field was found to be the minimum number of sample required to determine the population density of this mite in the field. So, it is summ-arised that the population of T. neocaledonicus can be estimated from fifty three leaves plucked at random from the field and counting the mites from 1 sq. cm area from anywhere on the lower surface of the leaf.
