Abstract

Species of the feather mite genus Falculifer are found on many columbiform birds in the Ancient World and the New World as well. As a result of polymorphism, identifying species among Falculifer males may be difficult. Examination of chelicerae is the safest way for such an identification. Five species of the genus Falculifer have been found on Columbiformes in West Indies: F. caraibensis, n. sp. on Columba fasciata and C. leucocephala; F. dinoceras (Trouessart 1899) on Geotrygon mystacea, F. isodontus, n. sp. on Zenaida aurita and Z. asiatica; F. leptotilae, n. sp. on Leptotila jamaicensis and L. verreauxi; F. rostratus (Buchholz 1869) on Columba livia domestica.
