Abstract

The authors report the results of several years observation on the hosts of Amblyomma (Xiphiastor) variegatum (Fabricius, 1794). The hosts of the preimaginal and imaginal (= adult) stages of the tick are quoted with their order of frequency. These data on the hosts and distribution relate to 28 368 ticks: 13 703 males, 5044 females, 5358 nymphs and 4263 larvae of A. variegatum collected from 57 hosts representing 46 different genus of vertebrates. This Amblyomma preferentially parasitizes the mammals (91,55%), the birds (8,11%) and then the reptiles (0,06%). 0,27% of our collections were obtained in natura (treeholes, vegetation and burrow). These observations cover the various ecological zones.
